Lakeshore Squares
Lakeshore Square Dancers believe in having fun! We enjoy our times together dancing and exercising to music. Square Dancing is a lighter form of exercise yet still benefitting the body. In addition to its health improvements, we create a family of friends. The First Presbyterian Church is gracious to allow us the opportunity to use their gym. We are very grateful. Square dancing involves four couples that listen to a call and dance patterns learned. It is fun and invigorating. The four couples make a square and dance one tip, consists of a patter call and a singing call. Square dancing has been around since the 17th century. It is first known from England but is very popular in France and Europe. It contains many similarities to the Scottish Country Dancing. There are two types of square dancing: Traditional and Modern Western. The Traditional form is danced to country dance music such as Irish jigs and reels and generally performed live with instruments of fiddle, banjo, guitar and double bass. Modern Western is danced to a variety of music ranging from pop to contemporary to traditional to broadway musical to country. It is often recorded music and the beat faster. Lakeshore Squares dance with modern western music, a blend of various hits over the years. We encourage all ages to join and learn square dance routines. It is a great social and physical avenue to have fun and exercise. We have classes that begin once a year in the fall. There are three classes that our club focuses on to get you started into square dancing – basic, mainstream and plus. Come take dance lessons with us and join in on the fun!
The Prez Says
Hello to all our fellow square dancers
I want to also point out that starting the next dance, Shirley Wilson will be having FREE Cha-Cha classes before each of our regular dances. Classes will begin at 7:00 pm and go until almost 8:00 pm. This will replace our normal ’early rounds’. We hope many people will take advantage of these free classes, and folks will come Cha-Cha with us.
On February 20th we will have our Class Graduation. Bob Morrison will be calling, and this is the time that all of the students get to show off all they have learned from their last five months of hard work. It is their time to shine, and the night is all about them. I hope you’ll join us as we welcome these new dancers and celebrate their graduation. We at Lake Shore look forward to welcoming these new dancers into our ranks.
It’s still a little while away, but I want to take a minute to make sure everyone knows about our Anniversary Dance we are having on March 20th. We’ll be celebrating 46 wonderful years as a club. I want to personally invite all the members from our sister clubs, and also want to invite everyone who is a member or has ever been a member of Lake Shore Squares to please attend that night. We understand that we are one of the oldest clubs in the state, and are proud of that fact. It is hard to keep something going for this long without the work and effort of a lot of people. We want to show our appreciation, and hope to have a big crowd in attendance. Ken Perkins will be calling, and I’m sure he’ll have something up his sleeve.
I also want to make everyone aware we will be collecting items to send to all our brave soldiers stationed over seas. We’ll have a benefit dance for that a few months from now,.. but I wanted to make everyone aware so you could be on the look-out for needed items and get them when you saw a sale. Down below I am going to provide a list below to give people some idea of the many items needed for our troops. If we all can starting saving items now,.. we should be able to have a nice collection to show our troops just how much we appreciate their sacrifices.
Please get out and dance. Square dancers are some of the finest people we have ever had the pleasure of dealing with. It is an honor to know all of you. We hope you’ll come and visit us soon and often.
